Preserve the 4.9 GHz Band for Public Safety
The 4.9 GHz band is used by public safety to support localized, bandwidth-intensive applications for mission-critical uses. Eligibility to use the 4.9 GHz band is limited to public safety entities and communications on the band must relate to the protection of life, health, or property. In recent years, the Federal Communications Commission conducted a rulemaking proceeding to propose action to promote more flexible and intensive use of the 4.9 GHz band.

APCO Applauds FCC Action on 4.9 GHz Public Safety Spectrum
Today the Federal Communications Commission adopted an order staying – or suspending – provisions of its rules for the 4.9 GHz spectrum band that would permit licensing of the spectrum for commercial purposes
Divided FCC Strips Needed Spectrum from Public Safety
Today, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), in a 3-2 vote, adopted an order that strips the 4.9 GHz band from public safety use. The majority, consisting of Chairman Pai and Commissioners O’Rielly and Carr, took this action against the wishes of a multitude of national public safety associations.
