SENATOR CLINTON, COMMISSIONER COPPS AND JAMES ASSEY TO BE HONORED AT APCO DINNER ON APRIL 19
April 17, 2007, Washington, D.C. -
The Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials (APCO) International announced today that Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton (D - NY) and Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Commissioner Michael J. Copps will be receiving the Leadership in Legislative Service and Leadership in Advancing Communications Policy Awards, respectively. James M. Assey, Jr., democratic senior counsel for communications and media issues on the Senate Commerce Committee, will also be receiving a Special Recognition Award. The award presentations will be made at the APCO International Third Annual Public Safety Communications Leadership in Policy Awards Dinner at the Park Hyatt in Washington, DC on April 19.
Senator Clinton is receiving her award for exemplary legislative leadership on public safety communications issues. Specifically, she is being honored for her continued legislative focus and support for issues related to interoperability and enhanced 9-1-1 (E9-1-1).
"As Senator, she has long been a champion of public safety communications issues," APCO International President Wanda McCarley said. "As co-founder and co-chair of the Congressional E-911 Caucus, Senator Clinton co-authored and worked to pass the ENHANCE Act of 2004 which created a grant program and provided federal coordination for wireless Phase II E-911 deployment throughout the nation."
Commissioner Copps is receiving his award for exemplary leadership at the FCC or in the Executive Branch on issues of concern to public safety communications. Specifically, he is being honored for steadfast support of public safety issues before the FCC.
"From the moment he joined the FCC, Commissioner Copps has made the public interest his guiding light," McCarley said. "He takes very seriously the statutory obligations of the FCC to protect the public, including the specific obligation of the FCC to promote the safety of life and property."
Assey is receiving his award for his work to help advance public safety communications policy. Specifically, he is being honored for his work on Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), E9-1-1 and interoperability.
"James support has been vital in several legislative initiatives," McCarley said. "He has always been open to public safety's concerns regarding interoperable communications, 9-1-1, VoIP 9-1-1 and other issues."
The APCO International Annual Public Safety Communications Leadership in Policy Awards Dinner is the premier event bringing together the policy leaders within the public safety communications community to honor those who have vigorously worked to create, advocate, and promote public safety communications policy. In addition to the awards to Senator Clinton, Commissioner Copps and Assey, the program will include award presentations on Leadership in Advocacy and Leadership in Regulatory Service.
