Atop this butte is one of 22 land mobile radio (LMR) towers that serve Whitman County. When a Whitman County first responder speaks into their radio, these towers receive the signal and retransmit it to cover a wide area. Each tower in this simulcast system needs to be perfectly synchronized to support the county’s first responders: dispatch operators, police, medical personnel, and — with increasing criticality to this wildfire-prone region — firefighters.
