Senate Passes 988 Lifeline Location Improvement Act of 2026

Earlier this week, the Senate passed the 988 Lifeline Location Improvement Act of 2026 (S. 3199), directing the Federal Communications Commission to initiate a notice of inquiry and the Government Accountability Office to complete a study and report addressing challenges associated with sending location information with calls to the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline.

On November 19, 2025, Senators John Barrasso (R-WY) and Ben Ray Lujan (D-NM) introduced the 988 Lifeline Location Improvement Act, a bill to establish an advisory committee to study the legal, technical, and funding challenges related to transmitting location information with calls to 988.
