In today’s ever-evolving world of emergency communications, the voices behind the headset often go unheard. This spotlight highlights Christie Nash, a dedicated telecommunicator whose journey into public safety reflects both resilience and a deep commitment to her community.
Christie describes herself first as a wife and mother of three, someone who enjoys beach trips, the outdoors, antique stores and “all things spooky.” That balance between personal life and professional intensity is a recurring theme in her story, one that many in the 9-1-1 field will recognize.
Interestingly, Christie did not initially set out to become a telecommunicator. She began her career in corrections but transitioned to a position closer to home due to family needs. Later, while working as a house manager for a home health agency, she came across a dispatch job posting unexpectedly and decided to apply. Since starting in January 2020, she has now spent over six years in the field, building both experience and perspective.
Like many in the profession, Christie sees a mix of motivations drawing people into dispatch. Some are driven by a desire to serve their communities, while others view it as a steppingstone into broader public safety careers. For her, the deciding factor ultimately became the opportunity to help others in meaningful ways.
When asked to describe a typical workday, Christie offers a candid and relatable answer: “I put the headset on, cause chaos, and go home.” Working overnight shifts from 2245 to 0645, she notes that no two nights are alike. Some are quiet, while others are nonstop. It’s this unpredictability and fast-paced environment that she finds most enjoyable, along with the sense of camaraderie that develops among coworkers.
Christie hopes to continue growing within the profession, with a goal of becoming a floor supervisor within the next five years. At the same time, she offers an honest assessment of the challenges facing industry. She believes that while many people enter dispatch for the benefits or pay, they may underestimate the emotional toll and the sacrifices required, particularly in terms of work-life balance. Burnout, compensation concerns and scheduling demands remain key reasons why people leave the field.
Retention, in her view, depends on adaptability. She emphasizes the importance of communication centers being open to change, especially when it comes to workplace culture and policies. Reflecting on her early days, Christie recalls a time when personal expressions, such as tattoos, piercings or non-traditional hair colors, were restricted. While those standards have since evolved, she highlights how such limitations once impacted morale and underscores the importance of creating inclusive, modern work environments.
As a current Communications Training Officer (CTO), Christie plays a direct role in shaping the next generation of telecommunicators. She takes pride in mentoring new hires, making a point to introduce herself and offer support from day one. She also emphasizes the value of starting each shift with a fresh mindset and making full effort during training. This is advice that she believes is essential for long-term success.
Christie sees young professionals as bringing “new ideas and positive energy” into the field, something she believes is critical as the industry continues to evolve. Within her own center, she has already seen changes such as the introduction of a Telecommunicator Senior role, offering additional leadership opportunities and operational flexibility. Looking ahead, she hopes to see more openness to scheduling innovations and stronger relationships with partner agencies.
If given the opportunity to speak to the entire 9-1-1 community, Christie’s message is simple but powerful: remember your purpose, give grace to others and recognize that even on the hardest days, you have done your best.
