Laraway Emergency Communications Center Telecommunicator Carynn Gayton received a call from a concerned family member whose loved ones in Kankakee County could not reach 9-1-1. When her attempt to transfer the call routed to a backup PSAP looped between Grundy County 9-1-1 and Kendall County 9-1-1, she made a critical decision: she held the line.
Rather than pass the call along, Gayton maintained the only confirmed line of communication with a potentially life-threatening scene, ensuring the caller was not lost in the system and that help would ultimately be reached.
