APCO Seeks Comments on Two Candidate American National Standards

Alexandria, VA – The Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials (APCO) International is seeking comments for two candidate American National Standards (ANS) titled Public Safety Communications Incident Handling Process and Non-9-1-1 Call Processing and Dispatch.

The revision of candidate ANS Public Safety Communications Incident Handling Process identifies the steps and decision-making points that should be considered while processing public safety requests for service. This revision will also address call handling metrics based on empirical data to further refine and improve the overall process.

The creation of candidate ANS Non-9-1-1 Call Processing and Dispatch addresses technological evolution, as new services become available to the public. Emergency communication centers (ECCs) are tasked with receiving and processing calls from sources other than 9-1-1 requiring new policies and procedures.

“APCO’s commitment to reaffirming, revising, and creating new standards plays a pivotal role in ensuring the emergency communications industry remains current and aligned with technological advancements,” said Becky Neugent, President of APCO International. “By adhering to American National Standards Institute (ANSI) guidelines, APCO ensures these standards are robust and compliant with nationally recognized benchmarks, fostering interoperability and efficiency across various technologies and systems used in emergency communications.”

Both standards are available for public review and comment beginning December 15 through January 29: Candidate American National Standards Open for Review and Comment
