APCO Seeks Comments on Candidate American National Standard for Public Safety Telecommunicators When Responding to Calls of Missing, Abducted and/or Sexually Exploited Children

Alexandria, VA – The Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials (APCO) International is seeking comments for the revision of APCO candidate American National Standard (ANS) for Public Safety Telecommunicators When Responding to Calls of Missing, Abducted and/or Sexually Exploited Children in its second public review and comment period ending May 29, 2022.

This standard serves as best practices guideline and operational model in support of the responsibilities of emergency communications center (ECCs) personnel when responding to incidents of missing, abducted and/or sexually exploited children. The standard will include procedures for effectively and efficiently processing these calls for service, resources available to the telecommunicators and law enforcement as well as processes in a logical progression from initial call intake through comprehensive data/information management.

“Providing the tools to be effective while handling calls of missing, abducted and sexually exploited children is the goal of the revision of this standard,” said Jason Kern, APCO International President. “The review of this document is paramount for our telecommunicators to be successful in helping with the recovery of children.”

The comments received during the first public review and comment have been highlighted in the document and only the highlighted text is open for this second public review and comment. For reference only, the entire draft can be found here.
