Alexandria, VA – The Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials (APCO) International is seeking comments on candidate American National Standards (ANS) Core Competencies and Minimum Training Standards for Public Safety Communications Training Officers (CTOs).
The CTO standard recognizes the critical importance of the training officer role within an emergency communications center (ECC). As the individuals responsible for preparing and mentoring new public safety telecommunicators, CTOs play a direct role in community and responder safety. This revision reflects modernized job functions and training expectations to ensure CTOs are equipped to develop the next generation of competent and confident telecommunicators.
“The updated CTO standard underscores the vital role training officers play within today’s ECCs,” said Jack Varnado, president of APCO International. “By strengthening the foundation of CTO training, we strengthen community and responder safety — and reinforce the professionalism at the heart of public safety communications.”
The public may review and comment on this candidate standard from March 6 through April 20, via the APCO website.
