Leveling Up: Being a Desirable Candidate for Promotion

Tuesday, August 8, 2023 | 10:30 – 11:30 a.m.
Melissa A. Alterio, M.S., CPE, RPL, Cobb County (E911) Department of Emergency Communications, Georgia

As is always the case, Director Alterio drew a sizable crowd of approximately 250 APCO attendees, with still more folks listening from outside Exhibit Hall #341 – the Career Advancement Center. This time they gathered to hear about how to “level up” when they are preparing for promotions.

Alterio brought 33 years of experience in this area to provide life lessons, excellent pointers and practical ways that anyone, from the frontline call taker and dispatch to the Executive Director, can use when preparing themselves to enter the arena and dare greatly to level up (or out) in their professional careers.

Alterio said “We begin our interview from the first day at our agencies, and everything we do matters towards becoming a viable candidate in consideration for promotion.” She stresses that it isn’t just a full resume or achievements, but how we have handled tasks assigned to us up to this point and how we have addressed times of conflict, stress, and overcoming adversity. Taking advantage of opportunities to practice interviews and always keeping the resumes updated are important, but the day-to-day way we perform where we are is how we get there.

Director Alterio can be reached at [email protected] She is happy to help anyone with questions or provide what she has to assist their leveling up.
