Federal Communications Commission
The annual FCC update provided attendees with the latest information on federal actions impacting public safety communications. Representatives from the Public Safety and Homeland Security Bureau — from both the Policy and Licensing Division and the Cybersecurity and Communications Reliability Division — shared updates on key rulemakings and initiatives affecting public safety communications.
They discussed ongoing efforts to enhance public alerting and improve network resiliency, as well as recent proceedings related to improving 9-1-1 location accuracy and next generation 9-1-1. The session covered a wide range of topics, including spectrum priorities such as the ongoing 4.9 GHz proceeding, updates to the Wireless Emergency Alerts and Emergency Alert System, and cyber considerations for emergency communications centers (ECCs), including how ECCs can report cyber incidents.
The Bureau also outlined recent improvements to the rules requiring outage reporting to ECCs and announced a new initiative to examine requirements for Multi-Line Telephone Systems (MLTS), along with new guidance on how to comply with existing MLTS rules.
Attendees gained valuable insight into current and upcoming FCC proceedings and how these efforts support the coordination, cybersecurity, and infrastructure essential to effective public safety communications.
