On September 30, the Federal Communications Commission launched a broad examination of the FCC’s framework for regulating 9-1-1. Citing “an era of rapid technological change,” the Commission’s Notice of Inquiry invites the public to consider how new technologies and services could reshape 9-1-1 in ways that may not be accounted for by its current regulatory framework. The proceeding invites stakeholders to look beyond today’s 9-1-1 system and help shape a regulatory approach that continues to meet public safety needs and consumer expectations.
APCO CEO and Executive Director Mel Maier welcomed the inquiry: “APCO supports taking this fresh look at how evolving technologies can help connect people when in need of assistance and dialing 9-1-1. Continued advancements in communications technology create opportunities to improve public safety, and we appreciate the Commission’s consideration of how its regulatory framework should evolve while preserving the reliability, interoperability, and resilience on which public safety agencies and the public depend.”
