Alexandria, VA – The Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials (APCO) International has filed a Project Initiation with the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) to revise three critical industry standards:
APCO American National Standard (ANS) Emergency Communications Common Disposition Codes for Data Exchange. Emergency communications centers (ECCs) across the country rely on disposition codes to accurately identify and communicate the outcomes of events and incidents. The current disposition codes standard requires revision to reflect modern emergency response practices and evolving incident disposition codes. This working group will meet virtually twice a month—on the second and fourth Wednesdays at 2 p.m. ET—for 50 minutes each.
APCO American National Standard (ANS) Public Safety Communications Common Incident Types for Data Exchange. This essential standard revision will establish a comprehensive, standardized vocabulary of incident types that enables seamless information sharing and resource coordination across public safety agencies during emergency responses. We seek dedicated volunteers to participate in a critical working group to develop and refine a standardized list of descriptive terms that clearly identify incident types requiring emergency response. This working group will meet virtually twice a month—on the second and fourth Mondays at 1 p.m. ET—for 50 minutes each.
APCO American National Standard (ANS) Emergency Communication Center (ECC) Key Performance Indicators. This revised standard will establish specific, measurable areas of ECC performance to effectively benchmark operational effectiveness and provide management with essential performance indicators. The standard will address call volume and response metrics, technology and communication channels, overall system performance and operations, and more. This working group will meet virtually twice a month—on the first and third Tuesdays at 2 p.m. ET—for 50 minutes each.
“Industry standards are critical to the 9-1-1 industry to ensure we are providing the highest level of service to our communities,” said Stephen Martini, president of APCO International. “Whether the standard is operational, technical and training related, we rely on our working group members to ensure the standard is shaped by the expertise and collaboration of the actual people behind the headset.”
APCO seeks ECC users, product producers and those with a general interest in ECC operations and equipment to serve on working groups for these standards. Participants will earn points toward their Registered Public-Safety Leader (RPL) recertification and receive recognition for their contributions to the final published standard. To apply, complete the online application at Join a Working Group.
The deadline to sign up is June 30. Selections will be made within two weeks of the closing date, and all will be notified of their status via email.
