APCO and IWA Collaboration Advances Technical Training for Public Safety Professionals

The recent collaboration between APCO and IWA Technical Services marked a significant milestone in advancing public safety communications training. Two highly specialized courses—General Communication Technician (GCT) Level 1 and Line Antenna Sweep—were successfully delivered to a cohort of industry professionals, equipping them with critical knowledge and hands-on experience essential for supporting and maintaining reliable emergency communications systems.

Held over the course of several days, the GCT Level 1 course introduced participants to foundational concepts in public safety communications infrastructure, including RF propagation, site safety, grounding and interference mitigation. Attendees gained a comprehensive understanding of the core principles needed for efficient field operations. Tom Murray, Chief Deputy Director of Will County Emergency Management, shared that the training filled critical knowledge gaps, “Before taking the classes, I was unsure of my RF technical skills. Following the classes, I can absolutely say that I am more confident in my knowledge of RF systems and equipment.”

Complementing the theory-based training, the Line Antenna Sweep class provided practical, field-focused instruction on the use of test equipment to verify the performance of transmission lines and antenna systems. Participants were able to apply new skills in real-world scenarios, enhancing their diagnostic and maintenance capabilities. Tom Murray shared, “The hands-on training with test equipment was invaluable. It provided an opportunity for all students to learn about various types of service monitors and antenna analyzers.”

The successful delivery of these courses reflects the growing need for trained technical personnel in the public safety communications field. The partnership between APCO and IWA Technical Services continues to strengthen the national capability to maintain mission-critical communications infrastructure.

Plans are already underway to offer additional sessions in response to high demand, with an emphasis on regional accessibility and advanced course offerings.
