The
Position:
Communication
Technician I Summary:
Under
the direction from the Fleet Manager or the Maintenance Technical Supervisor,
this p osition applies knowledge of electronic
theory and practice to assist in the installation, removal, and maintenance
of fixed-station and complex mobile communication equipment. This communications
work is typically performed either at a central shop or at remote communication
sites located throughout Pierce County. The Communication Technician will
work with increasing independence commensurate with demonstrated proficiency.
Communication
Technician II Summary: Under
the direction from the Fleet Manager or the Maintenance Technical Supervisor,
p erforms highly technical and engineering-related tasks that include
analyzing, developing, and implementing solutions for the installation,
maintenance, repair, modification, and calibration of a wide variety of
communications equipment that constitutes the Pierce Transit Communications
Network. This equipment includes point-to-point microwave systems; data
transmission systems; vehicle and portable radio systems, CAD/AVL, Smart
Card, GIS, Camera/Security Systems and fixed communication station equipment.
Assignments include emergency responses to independently analyze, repair,
or devise a temporary solution for restoring communication services.
Hiring
Wage:
Communication
Technician I - $28.60
per hour (Wage range $28.60 - $33.58) paid on a bi-weekly basis.
Communication
Technician II - $30.68
per hour (Wage range $30.68 - $35.93) paid on a bi-weekly basis. Excellent
benefits package.
Tool
Allowance:
Communication
Technician I and Communication Technician II, on January 1 of each year,
shall receive a tool allowance of three hundred fifty dollars ($350.00).
Certification Pay: An additional twenty-five cents
($.25) per hour will be paid to Communication Technician I’s and Communication
Technician II’s who obtain and retain advanced technical skills through
an Employer pre-approved Electronics Technicians Association (ETA) certification
program. This pay shall be limited to an additional three dollars ($3.00)
per hour per employee. It is the employee’s responsibility to renew or otherwise
keep current all certifications/technical licenses for which they are receiving
this pay and regularly provide this information to the Employer.
Minimum
Qualifications – Communication Technician I:
Required:
General
FCC radio/telephone operator’s license or equivalent; completion
of a two (2) year degree in Electronic, Electrical, or Computer Engineering
and two (2) years experience, or an e quivalent combination of education
and experience that provides the applicant with the knowledge, skills and
abilities required to perform the essential functions of the position. Desired:
NARTE Junior Technician Certification; Motorola ASTRO 25.7 certification
and experience; Harris Microwave Video Networking and P25 Microwave System
certification and experience; Cisco Routing and Switching certification
and experience.
Special
Requirements:
Must
be able to pass a security background check. Within the first six (6) months
of employment, enroll in the NARTE Junior Technician program with certification
to be completed within first year of employment. Must possess a valid Washington
State Driver's License at the time of hire and be able to obtain a Class
B Commercial Driver's License permit (with a third party-testing certificate)
within thirty (30) days of hire. Must obtain a CDL Class B within ninety
(90) days of hire. Must possess and be able to use basic hand tools including
electrical testing equipment and hand held electronic devices. Must have
the ability to perform the essential functions as described above including
the ability to maneuver objects weighing up to fifty (50) pounds. May be
required to work alternate shifts (day, swing, & graveyard), weekends,
and/or holidays. May be required to work under severe environmental conditions
and temperature extremes.

The Division
of Transportation System Development, Bureau of Traffic Operations is recruiting
to fill its State Electrical Engineer vacancy. This advanced level position
is the technical expert of the most complex electrical and/or electronics
systems across the state. This position can be headquartered out of our
Madison or Milwaukee office.
The hiring
list generated from this recruitment will also be used to fill an Electronic
Engineer-Advanced position. That vacancy is for the "statewide expert"
for electrical and electronic engineering issues related to the deployment,
operation and maintenance of the Intelligent Transportation Systems, related
to freeway and arterial traffic management; and can only be headquartered out
of the Milwaukee office.
The Division
of State Patrol in the Bureau of Public Security and Communications currently
has an Electrical Engineer Advanced vacancy located in Madison. This position
will provide engineering support for the bureau's public safety and communications
programs, including oversight of construction activity, engineering analysis
of radio frequency systems, audits of tower site facilities and other miscellaneous
services.

Duties :
Applying
a broad knowledge of complex electrical engineering principles, the State
Electrical Engineer (Electrical Engineer-Adv) has a critical role in the
development and administration of the statewide electrical program that
includes the communication and electrical component of traffic signals,
ITS, lighting and serves as statewide expert on electrical maintenance and
electrical systems design and operation.
The State
Electrical Engineer also leads the development of standards and guidelines
for electrical systems. Functioning as the electrical engineering liaison
to the Regional Operations Sections in electrical systems, this position
serves the Department as the statewide technical resource for construction
and maintenance of electrical systems in accordance with state and federal
policies, electrical codes, and Region procedures. In addition, the position
coordinates regularly with the State Lighting Engineer, State Signal Systems
Engineer and State Traffic Operations Center (STOC) Systems Engineer.
The Electronic
Engineer-Adv position applies a broad knowledge of complex electronic engineering
principles to the statewide Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), computers
and peripheral equipment, among other critical electronic equipment/devices.
Responsibilities include: (1) Managing the performance of consultants and
contractors involved in the operation and maintenance of the statewide freeway
traffic management system; (2) overseeing critical and preventive maintenance
contracts for the system; (3) coordinating use of ITS information with internal
and external customers; (4) directing and coordinating activities of maintenance
and IT staff; and (5) coordinating upgrades.

Typical
Duties Include:
Repair and install VHF equipment, such as VHF
conventional and VHF combining antenna systems, computer-based logging recorders,
dispatch console systems, base stations, mobile repeaters, mobile radio
equipment, public address systems, VHF DC and AC power systems, telephone
equipment.
Perform equipment testing, manufacture equipment
compliance testing, install and interconnect radio systems into a mock-up
environment, and perform system performance testing.
Install and repair MW equipment such as microwave
RF radios, multiplex equipment both analog and digital, MW power systems,
MW antenna systems, battery chargers, battery bank, and alarm-monitoring
systems.
Operate complex test equipment used in checking
Public Safety Radio equipment and operate computers to program, diagnose
and adjust Public Safety Radio equipment to ensure it is within FCC specifications.
Requirements:
Possession of FCC General Radiotelephone Operator
License.
Possession of a valid California driver’s license.
Two years of experience within the last five
years in maintaining, repairing, modifying or testing electronic telecommunications
equipment, one year of which must have been with VHF, UHF or microwave lightwave
telecommunications equipment.
Able to pass background check and physical exam.
Public Safety radio sites are located in both
urban and remote mountainous environments.
Requires physical agility and stamina to work
in and around telecommunications equipment, systems and radio vaults. Working
at altitudes in excess of 10 thousand feet.
Travel to urban and mountainous remote sites.
Operate 4 wheel-drive and snow vehicles in inclement weather conditions
such as rain, snow and mud on and off road in mountainous remote locations.
Work on telecommunications towers and structures
in excess of 100 feet.
