LOCATE VoIP and Emerging Technology Location Delivery Challenges
APCO Project 41 - LOCATE – VoIP and Emerging Technology Location Delivery Challenges (LOCATE-VoIP) was created to address the impact upon operational practices facing the public safety communications industry specific to voice over internet protocol and related technologies.
In August 2006, the APCO Project LOCATE Committee recommended that the APCO International Executive Council establish a new project – APCO Project 41 - LOCATE – VoIP and Emerging Technology Location Delivery Challenges (LOCATE-VoIP) to address the impact upon operational practices facing our members specific to voice over internet protocol and related technologies.
The Committee recognized that, as the title of the Project implies – Locate Our Citizens At Times of Emergency – it must acknowledge the new and expanding challenges related to location data delivery of emerging technologies that will continue to involve the public safety community and APCO members. The Committee further recognized that the general public consumer, while eagerly embracing alternatives to traditional telephone functionality will not recognize the danger of actual delays and/or denial of prompt emergency services, based upon location information errors within such systems until the crisis is theirs.
Project (41) LOCATE-VoIP Goals
- Provide the APCO Board of Officers timely public policy position recommendations related to current and emerging technologies and their impact on public safety communications with specific emphasis on location challenges.
- Establish strategies to ensure public safety interests related to deployment of non-traditional technologies, funding concerns, location challenges, etc. are effectively represented in various forums.
- Establish effective educational strategies for public safety personnel and elected officials related to current and emerging technology, location challenges, funding concerns, current public and private strategies and APCO activities.
