APCO APPLAUDS ATTORNEY GENERAL FOR D-BLOCK COMMENTS
October 13, 2009, Alexandria, Va. - The Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials (APCO) International today applauded Attorney General Eric Holder for his comments in support of direct allocation of the D-Block to public safety.
"In this regard let me be clear on one point," Holder said. "I strongly support removing the D-Block spectrum from auction so that it can be allocated directly to our nation's public safety officers. It is long past time to build the nationwide interoperable communications network we so desperately need in order to keep our nation safe during emergencies. Let's get it done!"
Holder's comments, in line with APCO International's long-standing position, were made during a speech at the Annual International Association of Chiefs of Police Conference in Denver.
Since 2003, APCO International's legislative priorities have included support of increasing the amount of spectrum allocated to public safety in the 700 MHz band for new interoperable broadband communication technologies.
"APCO International urges Congress to pass legislation that will reallocate the D Block of the 700 MHz band spectrum for public safety broadband communications, and require that such spectrum be assigned to the national public safety broadband licensee and combined with the current public safety broadband spectrum in the band," APCO's position statement says.
