Atlantic Hurricane Season starts and Northeast Pacific Hurricane Season enters peak activity period beginning June 1.

As the public safety communications community prepares for the 2009 hurricane season, APCO International recommends that communications centers be prepared for inoperable systems, loss of power, and security, personnel and supply needs. In addition, communications centers should focus on planning and training to include training on the National Incident Management System (NIMS) Incident Command System (ICS) and planning for system restoration, multi-agency response and evacuation.

Furthermore, APCO recommends that all communications centers take the time in the coming weeks to review and update their continuity of operations planning (COOP) and educate their personnel on all related topics including agency evacuation procedures, public notification and telecommunicator emergency response team (TERT) procedures.

APCO International also urges the public to make all necessary preparations for the hurricane season including creating family evacuation plans and compiling emergency supply kits. APCO International further reminds the public to call 9-1-1 for life threatening emergencies only – not for structural damage or power outages.

To further assist the nation’s communications centers in preparing for, responding to and recovering from hurricanes, APCO International offers the information and resource material referred to below and to the right.
