APCO Releases First American National Standard

September 28, 2007, Washington, DC – This week the Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials (APCO) International received its first American National Standard (ANS) designation from the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) for its Minimum Training Standards for Public Safety Communications Training Officers (CTO).

The CTO standard, originally developed as an APCO International Membership Standard by APCO's Call Center Standards Committee, provides training necessary to foster levels of consistency for training officers providing on-the-job training and to promote the leadership role of the CTO in a public safety communications center.

"This is a milestone event in APCO's history and a tremendous accomplishment for the public safety community." said APCO International President Willis Carter.

"It is important for public safety communications standards to be developed, and it is more important that public safety communications professionals be involved in developing those standards that will affect their future."

About ANSI
ANSI accredits standards developers with specialized expertise to create and maintain standards relating to a particular industry and serves as the central body responsible for the identification of a single, consistent set of American National Standards. ANS designation verifies that consensus has been achieved, ensuring balance, lack of dominance, and due process.
