APCO HOSTS COML TRAINING

August 16, 2009, Las Vegas, Nev. - In response to the immediate need for trained All-Hazard Communications Unit Leaders (COMLs), the Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials (APCO) International hosted the All-Hazards Communications Unit Leader (COML) Course in conjunction with its 75th Annual Conference and Exposition in Las Vegas, Nev. The course is required for telecommunicators, police and fire personnel to be officially recognized and utilized under the National Incident Management System (NIMS) command structure.

State and local government first responder representatives have developed a formal COML training program. During the past couple years, with support from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Office of Emergency Communications (OEC) and Office for Interoperability and Compatibility (OIC), the COML curriculum was completed and initial training courses offered. In April, the COML course was certified as NIMS-compliant.

This was the second year in a row APCO International has offered the COML course in conjunction with the conference. The course was taught August 13-15 and included 18 participants.

“APCO International has participated in the COML program from its inception,” APCO International President Chris Fischer said. “As part of the work group that developed the curriculum, we are proud to now offer the training at our conference.”
