Answering Suicidal Callers Video-Based Training Program
Many telecommunicators in the United States do not have training or experience handling suicidal callers. They may have developed their techniques while on the job through trial-and-error, but many do not have the benefit of formal training.
Suicidal callers present one of the most intimidating calls for a telecommunicator. The telecommunicator often feels they could say something wrong and cause someone to lose his life. Suicide calls are not calls that telecommunicators take on a daily basis; therefore, their skills are not as honed for these calls as they are for the other calls they receive. This program allows telecommunicators with little or no previous training to learn from the experiences of others in handling suicidal callers. This program also teaches telecommunicators about common myths associated with suicide, how to assess the risks of a possible suicide call, and the techniques that can aid them when handling such calls.
Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to:
- Dispel common myths about handling suicide calls.
- Cite the four types of crises subjects may face when making suicide calls.
- Apply basic suicide response assumptions.
- Assess resources with the caller.
- Build a relationship with the caller.
- Assess the degree of risk.
